DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) The thermal polymn. of styrene [100-42-5] retarded by FeCl3-DMF gave oligomers terminated by Cl at 1 end and by 1-phenylethyl or 4-phenyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-naphthyl groups at the other. These end groups confirm the mechanism of F. R. Mayo (1961) for thermal initiation of styrene polymn., in which initiating radicals are formed by transfer of H from styrene dimer (1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-phenylnaphthalene [3018-20-0]) to a 3rd mol. of styrene.
