DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 75 (Crystallography and Liquid Crystals) Section cross-reference(s): 25 The crystal and mol. structures of the title compds. were solved by single crystal x-ray anal. 4-Hydroxy-4'-nitro-biphenyl (NBO) is monoclinic, space group P21/n, with a 6.036(4), b 12.392(3), c 13.346(8) ?, b 96.46(3)°, Z = 4, dc = 1.44, 1105 relections with I > 3s(I), R = 0.043, Rw = 0.In this article, certain chemicals are used. Some of their cas registry numbers are 135644-84-7 and 3916-44-7 052. Its K salt (NBOK) is also monoclinic space group P21/a, with a 11.277(2), b 7.3606(6), c 14.383(3) ?, b 107.804(7)°, Z = 4, dc = 1.59, 2288 obsd. reflections with I > 3s(I), R = 0.041, Rw = 0.056. At. coordinates are given for both compds. NBO and NBOK crystd. in layer-like structures. The biphenyl mols. of NBO were arranged as corrugated ribbons in layers. The ionic and polar moiety of NBOK (K, O, and crystal water) were sepd. by biphenyl units to form layers. The almost planar biphenyl units of NBOK were arranged in pairs and exhibited a short mol. distance of 3.08 ? within 1 pair. .
