DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 42 (Coatings, Inks, and Related Products) The reaction of 4,4'-bis(5-carboxy-5-methyl-1,3-dioxan-2-yl)diphenyl ether (I) [61671-65-6] with glycols in presence of Bu4Ti gave liq. oligoesters which were transesterified with hexakis(methoxymethyl)melamine (II) to give polyesters, such as 1,4-butylene glycol-I-II copolymer (III) [61680-43-1]. Solns. of these polyesters in BuOCH2CH2OH-acetone mixts. each contg. 0.1% BgK 300 surfactant were used to prep. clear coatings. The coatings prepd. from III or 1,3-butylene glycol-I-II copolymer [61680-44-2] and hardened at 210.degree. were unchanged after immersion in 1% NaOH soln., water, or 1% H2SO4 soln. at 20.degree. for 24 h. The coatings prepd. from ethylene or propylene glycols had lower chem. resistance than III. The prepn. of novel I consisted of refluxing 4,4'-oxydibenzaldehyde (IV) [2215-76-1] with 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid [4767-03-7] in MeOH contg. p-MeC6H4SO3H; the yield was 82%; IV was prepd. by the Sommelet procedure from 4,4'-bis(chloromethyl)diphenyl ether (V) [2362-18-7]. A modification in the conditions of V prepn. from Ph2O, HCHO, and HCl(g) in AcOH-HCl mixt. over SD ion exchange resin in acidic form gave 78-82% yield.
