The thermal reaction of II and V gave no evidence for ortho C metalation. Ligand exchange of II and V with PPh(tert-Bu)2 takes place through an associative mechanism at high temp. with with activation energies of 7.8 and 12.In this article, certain chemicals are used. Some of their cas registry numbers are 62945-63-5 and 53199-31-8 1 kcal mol-1, resp. These complexes, except I and IV, are sensitive to dioxygen and react even in the solid state to produce MO2L2. Dioxygen coordination in PdO2[PPh(tert-Bu)2]2 is reversible, whereas that in the corresponding Pt complex is irreversible. I reacts very slowly with dioxygen to give a red polynuclear O-contg. compd. [PdOP(tert-Bu)3]n. The reaction of I, II, and V with CO gives M3(CO)3L3 (M = Pd, L = P(tert-Bu)3, PPh(tert-Bu)2; M = Pt, L = PPh(tert-Bu)2). Dimethyl fumarate (DF) with II or V gives M(DF)2PPh(tert-Bu)2 (M = Pd, Pt), whereas maleic anhyride (MA) gave M(MA)[PPh(tert-Bu)2]2. Oxidative addn. of HX (X = Cl, O2CCX3) to I, II, and V gave trans-MH(X)L2 (M = Pd, L = P(tert-Bu)3, PPh(tert-Bu)2; M = Pt, L = PPh(tert-Bu)2). MeOH reacts with PtL2 to give stable dihydride complexes trans-PtH2L2 (L = PPh(tert-Bu)2, P(cyclo-C6H11)3, P(CHMe3)3), which can also be obtained by H addn. to the appropriate PtL2 at room temp. under normal pressure. IV and V do not add H. All the PdL2 complexes are inert toward MeOH and H. Factors detg. the obsd. reactivities of these ML2 complexes were discussed in terms of steric and electronic effects. .

The complex was also obtained from the reaction of Pd(h5-C5H5)(h3-C3H5) with P(CMe3)2H in toluene. Its crystal and mol. structure were detd. by an x-ray diffraction study. Each Pd bears a terminal P(CMe3)2H ligand and the 2 metal centers are bridged by 2 phosphido ligands.
