DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacology) The effects of 3 nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), carprofen (I) [53716-49-7], benoxaprofen (II) [51234-28-7], and indomethacin (III) [53-86-1], on 4-h and 24-h carrageenan [9000-07-1] pleurisy was investigated. All 3 compds. inhibited both the edematous and cellular components of the 4-h pleurisy. In the 24-h pleurisy only indomethacin affected cell accumulation, and the inhibitory effect obsd. with selective for mononuclear cells. The vol. of exudate recovered from the pleural cavity at 24 h, in animals which had received any of the 3 drugs, was greater than in animals receiving vehicle. The results of a time-course expt. with indomethacin suggest that the obsd. effects of the NSAID may be a consequence of their inhibition of both the development and decay phases of the pleural inflammation, particularly with regard to the exudative component of the response.
