DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacology) The gastrocytoprotective effects of colloidal bismuth subcitrate (De-Nol) [57644-54-9] were compared with those of sucralfate [54182-58-0] and a methylated analog of prostaglandin E2 [39746-25-3] against acute gastric lesions induced by acidified aspirin and abs. ethanol in rats. Both De-Nol and sucralfate given orally dose-dependently prevented the formation of gastric lesions by the ulcerogens; De-Nol was 2-7 times more potent than sucralfate. As the protective activities of both De-Nol and sucralfate on ethanol lesions could be reversed by pretreatment with indomethacin and since De-Nol and sucralfate increase the mucosal generation and luminal release of PGE2, it is postulated that mucosal prostaglandins may be involved in the mechanism of action of these drugs on the gastric mucosa. .

Endoscopic gastric specimens were taken from the body and antrum before and 90 min after drug ingestion and the PGE content was measured by radio-immunoassay. There was more PGE in the antrum than in the body.In this experiment, several chemicals are used like 50-78-2 and 5697-56-3 Aspirin, sucralfate and antacid reduced the amt. of PGE in the antral mucosa. None of the drugs had any effect on the PGE levels measured in the body mucosa. .
