(pseudocumene [95-63-6]) trimethylbenzenes allows one to obtain O-contg. derivs. which can be used as raw materials for synthesizing monomers for obtaining heat-resistant plastics. The electrochem. oxidn. was 1st accomplished of an emulsion of mesitylene and pseudocumene in acid (30% H2SO4) or alk. (15% aq. NaOH) electrolytes on Pt anodes in a 2-chamber cell at 35.degree. and c.d. 5-10 A/dm2. As process initiators (O-carriers), the sulfates of Mn, Cs, Cr and Pr were tested. The principle product of mesitylene oxidn. was mesitylenaldehyde [5779-95-3]. In the electrochem. oxidn. of a pseudocumene emulsion in H2SO4, the principal products were 2,4-dimethylbenzaldehyde [15764-16-6] and 3,4-dimethylbenzaldehyde [5973-71-7] and their corresponding acids. A peroxide mechanism for the electrochem. oxidn. of mesitylene and psuedocumene is proposed. Product yields under various conditions are given. .
