It is not known why these acids show this dose-dependent inhibition of thymidine-3H incorporation, but it may be related to the level of endogenous thymidine in the cells. If the intracellular thymidine concn. is depleted in the absence of folates due to inadequate synthesis, exogenously added thymidine-3H would be rapidly incorporated. However, the incorporation of labeled thymidine would be lessened if the presence of folates in the medium permitted thymidine synthesis to occur during the incubation prior to thymidine-3H addn.
