DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Synthetic High Polymers) In the photochem. reactions of N-vinylcarbazole (I) [1484-13-5] in the presence of Et3N [121-44-8] or Ph3N [603-34-9] in C6H6 or Me2CO, I may act as an electron acceptor in the electronically excited state. These reactions were characterized by 3 features: (a) photoradical polymn. of I was induced in C6H6 and greatly accelerated in Me2CO in the presence of Et3N, (b) Ph3N inhibited the photoradical polymn. of I which otherwise occurred in Me2CO, and (c) the cyclodimerization of I which occurs in Me2CO in the presence of dissolved O is completely quenched by the addn. of Et3N or Ph3N; instead photoradical polymn. of I occurred with Et3N, but no net reaction occurred with Ph3N. A tentative mechanism was proposed for the Et3N-induced photoradical polymn. of I in which a net H atom transfer occurs from Et3N to the excited singlet or triplet I via charge-transfer interactions to give free radical species whch initiate radical polymn. of I.
