DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Synthetic High Polymers) The Me3COLi (I) [1907-33-1]-initiated copolymn. of CH2:CMeCO2Me [80-62-6] (II) with CH2:CMeCO2(CH2)2OMe (III) [6976-93-8] in C6H6 proceeded (like the homopolymn. of III) in 2 stages sepd. by a plateau on the conversion curve. The growth rate in stage 1 and the length of the plateau were functions of the II-III ratio while in stage 2, the growth rate was almost const. The isotacticity of the copolymer resulting in stage 1 decreased with increasing concn. of III in the monomer mixt. and was almost identicl with that of III homopolymer when the initial molar ratio of II-III was 1:1. In stage 2, mainly syndiotactic copolymer was formed regardless of the low content of III in the mixt. In stage 1, III is assumed to participate in formation of activated centers and to lower their stereospecific effect for isotactic growth. III probably forms with unreacted I a transition compd. which is rearranged into activated centers of stage 2, differing from those of stage 1 in lifetime and stereospecific efficiency.
