DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 36 (Physical Properties of Synthetic High Polymers) Light scattering data for solns. of poly(Me methacrylate) (I) [9011-14-7] (wt.-av. mol. wt. 2.44 ′ 106) in a BuCl [109-69-3]-MeOCH2CH2OH [109-86-4] mixed solvent system were analyzed in the framework of the 2-parameter theory to study the excluded vol. effect. The mol. wt. obtained from zero-angle scattering was independent of the compn. of the mixed solvent. The 2nd virial coeff. and the mean-square radius of gyration, obtained as a function of the vol. fraction, u2, of MeOCH2CH2OH in the mixed solvent, showed a large max. value at the same u2. The behavior of the universal function Y as a function of the expansion factor a showed the same trend as those obsd. in expts. with a single solvent. The excluded vol. effect in the ternary system did not show a clear difference from that in systems of a single solvent. Based on the magnitude of the excluded vol. of the polymer segment, the mixed solvent acts as a good solvent for I.

The binary interaction function for the mixed solvent was detd. as a function of the vol. fraction, u2, of I in the mixed solvent by using the exptl. data of the heat of mixing and the boiling temp. The 2nd virial coeffs., calcd. from the obsd. binary interaction functions with a rigorous thermodn. relation for the 3-component system, were ~8 times larger than the obsd. ones except in the region u2 <0.2, where the calcd. values were neg., opposite to the obsd. ones. Agreement between the obsd. and calcd. 2nd virial coeffs. was obtained by introducing a ternary function, gT(u2,f3), as a function of u2 and the vol. fraction f3 of the polymer.
