DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) Sol. polymers [95349-11-4] were obtained by copolymn. of styrene (I) [100-42-5] with 5-nitrofurfural (II) [698-63-5] in PhCl initiated by BF3.Et2O [109-63-7] at -25 to +25°. I reacted wia its aldehyde group but, in addn. to the usual reactions of chain propagation, a substitution of the I and units of the growing chain took place. The monomer reactivity ratios were calcd. II did not add to its ion (r2 = 0), and the reactiivty ratios of I increased with increasing temp. (r1 = 0.87, 2.3, and 3.15 at -25, 0, and 25°, resp.). The ratio of the rate consts. of the substitution of the end group of the growing copolymer chain by I and II was also calcd. The substitution reaction of the type was not obsd. in copolymn. of II with a-methylstyrene [98-83-9].

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 3 (Biochemical Interactions) 5-Nitro-2-furaldehyde (I) [698-63-5] was mutagenic for M. phlei, the effect being measured by the induction of reversions in auxotrophic strains, of mutants resistant to isoniazid, and of phenotypic changes. The max. increase in reversions of auxotrophic strains occurred at the onset of action of I. The rate of induction of mutants resistant to isoniazid was related to the survival of the cells, and the inductions of phenotypic changes exhibited different kinetics.
