DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 5 (Agrochemicals) ED50 values representing the toxicity, heat-stability, and UV-irradn. stability of benomyl [17804-35-2], TBZ (I) [148-79-8], MBC [10605-21-7], fuberidazole [3878-19-1], 2-phenylbenzimidazole [716-79-0], 2-(o-chlorophenyl)benzimidizole [3574-96-7], and S-octylisothiouronium chloride [3544-29-4] to the tested fungi, as well as the antibacterial activity of such fungicides upon Pseudomonas fluorescens, a pathogenic bacteria of cultivated Shiitake-mushroom, were studied. The effects of these fungicides for the control of mycoparasites on the Shiitake bed-log were examd. too. Results of the selectivity ratio calcd. from the ED50 of fungicides showed the effectiveness to be MBC > benomyl > fuberidazole > 2-phenylbenzimidazole > 2-(o-chlorophenyl)-benzimidazole > S-octylisothiouronium chloride. Only S-octylisothiouronium chloride exhibited appreciable antibacterial activity. For benomyl and S-octylisothiouronium chloride, heat treatment decreased their stability whereas the other fungicides were heat stable. 2-Phenylbenzimidazole and 2-(o-chlorophenyl)-benzimidazole were not effected by the UV-irradn. Although the other fungicides were. Spraying suspensions of benomyl, MBC, TBZ, fuberidazole, 2-phenylbenzimidazole or 2-(o-chlorophenyl)-benzimidazole on a log inoculated with Shiitake-fungus showed that these fungicides could be successfully utilized without the invasion of the mycoparasite. The effectiveness in vitro and in vivo of all examd. fungicides, except S-octylisothiouronium chloride, were approx. similar to each other. S-octylisothiouronium chloride in vivo could not protect the invasion of the mycoparasite in high concn. of 10,000 ppm.

Thermal decompn. of 4'(5')-(benzimidazolyl)-1,2-perinaphthoylenebenzimidazole [41257-17-4], modeling polybenzimidazolylnaphthoylenebenzimidazoles, was investigated in greater detail.
