- Porous hydrogel wound covering. Nambu, Masao (Nippon Oil Co., Ltd. , Japan). Eur. Pat. Appl. EP 95892 A1 7 Dec 1983, 48 pp. DESIGNATED STATES: R: DE, FR, GB. (English). (European Patent Organization). CODEN: EPXXDW. CLASS: IC: A61L015-01; C08L029-04. APPLICATION: EP 83-303021 25 May 1983. PRIORITY: JP 82-87979 26 May 1982. DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 63 (Pharmaceuticals) Netlike wound coverings are prepd. by pouring a mixt. of poly(vinyl alc.) [9002-89-5] 1.5-8, C2-20 polyhydric alc. 10-85, and high-viscosity H2O-sol. macromol. 0.2-15% by wt. over a plate with 50,000-200,000 projections/m2, occupying 20-50% of the total surface, cooling the plate to 0-6° or less, and lyophilizing. The net has good mech. strength and elasticity, does not irritate the wound, is nonadhesive, and has good permeability to exudate. A suspension of poly(vinyl alc.) (99.5% hydrolysis, d.p. 2600, viscosity of 4% soln. at 20° of 67 cP) 3.4, propylene glycol [57-55-6] 50, propylene glycol alginate [9005-37-2] 0.8, and H2O 46 g was steam sterilized. The suspension, 13 g, was poured onto a gas-sterilized polyethylene plate (120,000 projections/m2 covering 50% of the 12 ′ 12 cm plate), cooled at -50° for 0.7 h, dehydrated in vacuo for 4 h to give 8 g of a gel net with an apparent tensile strength of up to 0.7 kg/cm2 and a compression-resistant strength of 310 kg/cm2. The gel was sealed in a sterilized polyethylene bag. The gel was applied to infected burns and covered by gauze and bandaged; pus passed through the net and was absorbed by the gauze and the wound healed cleanly. The gauze remained elastic on freezing, and moisture loss at 37° was small. An antimicrobial agent could be incorporated into the polymer soln. before freezing.
