Moderately toxic by intravenous route. Experimental reproductive effects. Questionable carcinogen with experimental tumorigenic data. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes.
With the CAS registry number 9005, Tween60 is also named as Polyethylene glycol (3) sorbitan monostearate. The classification codes are Pharmaceutic aid [surfactant]; Reproductive Effect; TSCA Flag XU [Exempt from reporting under the Inventory Update Rule]; Tumor data. It is pale yellow waxy paste which should avoid contact with skin and eyes. And it is stable under normal temperature and pressure. Additionally, Tween60 should be stored in the cool and dry place.
Preparation of Tween60: It can be obtained by the addition reaction of Span-60 and ethylene oxide at the temperature of 130~170 °C and at the presence of sodium methoxide (or sodium ethoxide).
Uses of Tween60: It is a class of emulsifiers used in some pharmaceuticals and food preparation. It is often used in cosmetics to solubilize essential oils into water-based products. In addition, it is also used as defoamer, lubricant, cleaning agent, antistatic agent, solubilizer, dispersant, antistatic agent, stabilizer, lubricant and so on.
The following are the toxicity data which has been tested.
