It is prepared by a reaction between arsenic(III) chloride and an iodine salt:

AsCl_3(aq) + 3KI_(aq) → AsI_3(aq) + 3KCl_(aq)

Under the name of Donovan's solution, Arsenic iodide (CAS NO.7784-45-4) was once recommended to treat rheumatism, arthritis, malaria, trypanosome infections, tuberculosis, and diabetes.

Confirmed human carcinogen. A poison. See also ARSENIC COMPOUNDS and IODIDES. Can form a shock-sensitive compound with sodium or potassium. When heated to decomposition it emits very toxic fumes of I⁻ and arsenic.
