Experimental and theoretical investigations of the antioxidant activity of 2,2′-methylenebis(4,6-dialkylphenol) compounds
The antioxidant activity of two primary antioxidants, 2,2′-methylenebis(4-methyl-6-tert-butylphenol) (MMBPH2) and 2,2′-methylenebis(4,6-di-tert-butylphenol) (MDBPH2), has been studied using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method. The synthesized compounds have been successfully characterized systematically using elemental analyses, infrared, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra and GC–MS. Importantly, it has been found that the compound MMBPH2 in particular is more active in DPPH radical scavenging. In addition, density functional theory calculations (B3LYP) have been used to predict the antioxidant activity and predict structural geometries of the compounds in the gas phase.

Exploiting the photocatalytic activity of TiO2towards the depolymerization of Kraft lignin
Lignin is a promising renewable source of aromatic chemicals. Described herein is a new photocatalytic methodology for depolymerization of oxidized Kraft lignin to industrially relevant aromatic platform chemicals. The photooxidation route begins with oxidation of alcohol moieties using a gold nanoparticle/hydrotalcite composite. Next, the oxidized lignin is subjected to UVA irradiation in the presence of TiO2, leading to a 3-fold decrease of its molecular weight and to the formation of various monolignols. The products obtained in both steps were characterized using FTIR, SEC, GC-MS, and 2D NMR spectroscopy, which confirm the depolymerization of lignin to smaller molecular weight products. This method offers both energetic and chemical advantages over thermochemical processing for lignin valorisation.

Sonocatalytic removal of naproxen by synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles on montmorillonite
ZnO/MMT nanocomposite as sonocatalyst was prepared by immobilizing synthesized ZnO on the montmorillonite surface. The characteristics of as-prepared nanocomposite were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The synthesized samples were used as a catalyst for sonocatalytic degradation of naproxen. ZnO/MMT catalyst in the presence of ultrasound irradiation was more effective compared to pure ZnO nanoparticles and MMT particles in the sonocatalysis of naproxen. The effect of different operational parameters on the sonocatalytic degradation of naproxen including initial drug concentration, sonocatalyst dosage, solution pH, ultrasonic power and the presence of organic and inorganic scavengers were evaluated. It was found that the presence of the scavengers suppressed the sonocatalytic degradation efficiency. The reusability of the nanocomposite was examined in several consecutive runs, and the degradation efficiency decreased only 2% after 5 repeated runs. The main intermediates of naproxen degradation were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-Mass).

Convenient synthesis of 2,2-and 4,4-methylenebisphenols with bulky alkyl substituents and evaluation of their antioxidant activity
The work is devoted to a convenient procedure of the synthesis of 2,2-and 4,4-methylenebisphenols with alkyl substituents in heterogeneous catalysis. This compounds were obtained with yields up to 87% by reflux of 2,4-or 2,6-dialkylphenols with HCHO in n-octane in the presence of KSF clay. We found that the antioxidant activity on DPPH test for two novel methylenebisphenols having isobornyl fragments was comparable with control drugs.

About selective methods of synthesis of 6-tert-butyl-2-methylphenol and 6-tert-butyl-2,4-dimethylphenol
Vapor phase catalytic methylation with methanol of 2-tert-butylphenol at the temperature 280-300°C proceeds selectively with formation of 6-tert-butyl-2-methylphenol. Elevating reaction temperature above 300°C leads to formation of 2,6-dimethylphenol. Reaction of 2-tert-butylphenol with methanol in alkaline medium in the presence of zinc oxide is shown to lead initially to formation of a mixture of calixarenes and methylenebisphenols that at elevated temperature exert splitting leading in future to 6-tert-butyl-2,4-dimethylphenol. Obtaining it in this reaction from 2,2′-methylenebis-(6-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol) proceeds selectively. Pathways of the reductive methylation of methylenebisphenols with methanol in alkaline medium is considered.

A method for preparing sterically hindered bis- or polyphenols of the formula: STR1 wherein R' is hydrogen, a C1 -C4 alkyl; R" and R"' the same or different and are each: STR2 wherein R is a tertiary C4 -C8 alkyl, R1 and R2 are the same or different and represent a C1 -C8 alkyl or a C6 -C8 cycloalkyl, or a C7 -C9 aralkyl, which comprises reacting the starting sterically hindered 2,4,6-trialkylphenols of the formula: STR3 wherein A is a C1 -C8 alkyl or a C6 -C8 cycloalkyl or a C7 -C9 aralkyl or a 3,5-dialkyl-2-hydroxybenzyl of the formula: STR4 B is a C1 -C8 alkyl, or a C6 -C8 cycloalkyl, or a C7 -C9 aralkyl, or a 3,5-dialkyl-4-hydroxybenzyl of the formula: STR5 wherein R1 and R are as identified above, with acetals, aldehydes or donors of C1 -C5 aldehydes in an acidic medium at a temperature within the range of from 60° to 200° C. in the presence of an acidic catalyst, followed by isolation of the desired product. The method according to the present invention makes it possible to prepare sterically hindered bis- or polyphenols in a single stage, whereby the process technology is substantially simplified as compared to those of the prior art. The method of the present invention precludes formation of waste water and atmospheric pollutants. The method ensures preparation of the desired products possessing high quality in high yield without any additional crystallization.

Method of producing 2,2 '-methylenebis(4,6-dialkylphenols)
A method of producing 2,2'-methylenebis(4,6-dialkylphenols) residing in that 2,4-dialkylphenols interact with acetals in the presence of an acid catalyst at a temperature from 30° C to 140° C with the formation of a reaction mixture containing the desired product and with subsequent separation of the desired product from said mixture, the starting reagents being taken in amounts of 1 mole of 2,4-dialkylphenol per 1-10 moles of acetal. The method is technologically simple and accomplished without the formation of waste water.
