- Ionic liquids with symmetrical dialkoxymethyl-substituted imidazolium cations
-
A new one-step procedure is described for the synthesis of disubstituted imidazolium chlorides. 1,3-Dialkoxymethylimidazolium chlorides thus obtained can be employed as synthetic precursors of symmetrical ILs. The salts have been found to exhibit antimicrobial activity and an antielectrostatic effect. Their densities and viscosities have been determined and are reported herein. It has also been demonstrated that the ILs can be decomposed using an aqueous solution of KMnO4. For each IL, the permanganate index (IMn) has been estimated, which varies with the structure of cation. The only limitation of IMn is the degree to which the IL dissolves in water.

- Speeds of sound in ionic liquids under elevated pressures. New experimental data and CP-PC-SAFT modelling
-
This study reports synthesis of a new ionic liquid ethyl-1-octyloxymethylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C2imC1OC8][NTf2]) and its speed of sound data at 295.15 K ≤ T ≤ 373.15 K and 1 bar ≤ P ≤ 1471.5 bar. In addition, the atmospheric pressure densities of this IL were measured at 292.05 K ≤ T ≤ 423.65 K and determined at 295.15 K ≤ T ≤ 373.15 K and 1 bar ≤ P ≤ 1500 bar. Basing on a representative variety of ILs, it is demonstrated that the CP-PC-SAFT EOS adjusted to their high-pressure density data by a standardized numerical procedure and attached by a simple expression for estimating the ideal gas heat capacities is capable to predict sound velocities in a particularly accurate manner, with AAD around 1% and at times even smaller that the experimental uncertainties.

- Expanded substrate scope and improved reactivity of ether-forming cross-coupling reactions of organotrifluoroborates and acetals
-
Mixed acetals and organotrifluoroborates undergo BF3· OEt2-promoted cross-couplings to give dialkyl ethers under simple, mild conditions. A survey of reaction partners identified a hydroxamate leaving group that improves the regioselectivity and product yield in the BF 3·OEt2-promoted coupling reaction of mixed acetals and potassium alkynyl-, alkenyl-, aryl- and heteroaryltrifluoroborates to access substituted dialkyl ethers. This leaving group enables the reaction to proceed rapidly under mild conditions (0 °C, 5-60 min) and permits reactions with electron-deficient potassium aryltrifluoroborates that are less reactive with other acetal substrates. A study of the reaction mechanism and characterization of key intermediates by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography identified a role for the hydroxamate moiety as a reversible leaving group that serves to stabilize the key oxocarbenium intermediate and the need for a slight excess of organodifluoroborane to serve as a catalyst. A secondary role for the boron nucleophile as an activating ligand was also considered. These studies provide the basis for a general class of reagents that lead to dialkyl ethers by a simple, predictable cross-coupling reaction.

- 3-Alkoxymethyl-1-(1R,2S,5R)-(-)-menthoxymethylimidazolium salts-based chiral ionic liquids
-
A new group of imidazolium salt-based chiral ionic liquids have been prepared and characterized. The chiral ionic liquids obtained are stable in air, in contact with water and popular organic solvents. Their physicochemical properties, single-crystal X-ray structures, antimicrobial activities, and antielectrostatic effects have been determined. The chiral ionic liquids synthesized have proven to represent not only potential new solvents in asymmetric synthesis but also effective disinfectants with antielectrostatic activity.

- Synthesis and anti-microbial activities of some pyridinium salts with alkoxymethyl hydrophobic group
-
A novel class of functionalised cationic surfactant has been obtained. The work-up procedure of synthesis is very simple, the yield is high and the pyridinium salts with alkoxymethyl hydrophobic group are easily purified. All the salts examined showed anti-microbial activities. Some of them exhibited strong activity and wide anti-bacterial spectra similar to the activity of benzalkonium chloride. The relationship between chemical structure and anti-microbial activity was analysed by the QSAR method.
