A thermal addition of aliphatic dicarboxylic acids to bicyclo[2.2.1]- heptene hydrocarbons and to tricyclo[5.2.1.02,6]deca-3,8-diene was investigated and new samples of dicarboxylic acids alicyclic monoesters were synthesized. Some of monoesters synthesized have a pleasant fragrance and can find application as fragrance substances. They are also of interest as initial components for preparation of new organic compounds. The compositions are useful in providing cooling sensations to the skin or mucous membranes of the body.

Various types of alcohol O-hemiesters 7a-m were synthesized conveniently in good yield by reaction with isopropenyl esters 4a-f in the presence of a catalytic amount of conc.H2SO4 or toluene-p-sulfonic acid followed by selective deprotection of the terminal esters.This method was applied to a preparation of hydrophilic oxaunomycin 10-O-hemiester derivatives 14a,b and 19a-c.
