Production Methods
Isobutyl methacrylate is produced by the esterification or
transesterification of isobutyl alcohol with either methacrylic
acid or methyl methacrylate .

Flammable. Isobutyl methacrylate is sensitive to heat, air and light.
Reactivity Profile
Isobutyl methacrylate is an ester. Esters react with acids to liberate heat along with alcohols and acids. Strong oxidizing acids may cause a vigorous reaction that is sufficiently exothermic to ignite the reaction products. Heat is also generated by the interaction of esters with caustic solutions. Flammable hydrogen is generated by mixing esters with alkali metals and hydrides. Isobutyl methacrylate polymerizes readily.

The invention relates to an improved method for the continuous production of alkyl(methyl)acrylates by transesterification of methyl(meth)acrylate with alcohols that are heavy in comparison with methanol. A special processing technique makes it possible to obtain new levels of product quality. Very high space-time-overall yields can also be obtained. The invention is characterized by the multiple use of a homogeneous catalyst which thereby reduces the costs of auxiliary agents significantly.
