Mdm2 inhibitors
Mdm2 inhibitors are pharmaceutical compounds designed to target and inhibit the activity of murine double minute 2 (Mdm2) protein. Mdm2 is a negative regulator of the tumor suppressor protein p53, which plays a crucial role in regulating cell cycle progression, DNA repair, and apoptosis. Mdm2 binds to p53, inhibiting its transcriptional activity and promoting its degradation by the proteasome, thereby suppressing p53-mediated responses to cellular stress and DNA damage. In cancer cells, overexpression of Mdm2 can lead to decreased p53 function, allowing cells to evade apoptosis and proliferate uncontrollably. By inhibiting Mdm2, Mdm2 inhibitors aim to disrupt the Mdm2-p53 interaction, stabilize p53 levels, and restore its tumor-suppressive functions.
