Bcl-2 activator
A Bcl-2 activator refers to a class of compounds or molecules that specifically target and activate B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) proteins. Bcl-2 proteins are key regulators of apoptosis (programmed cell death) and play a critical role in maintaining cellular homeostasis by regulating mitochondrial integrity and apoptotic pathways. By activating Bcl-2 proteins, these compounds aim to promote cell survival and inhibit apoptosis. The activation of Bcl-2 can prevent the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria, thereby blocking the initiation of the intrinsic apoptotic pathway. This inhibition of apoptosis is particularly relevant in diseases characterized by excessive cell death, such as neurodegenerative disorders and ischemic injuries.
