IAP antagonist

IAP antagonists are a class of compounds designed to inhibit inhibitor of apoptosis proteins (IAPs), which are a family of proteins that regulate programmed cell death (apoptosis). IAPs function by inhibiting caspases, which are key enzymes involved in apoptosis. By blocking IAPs, IAP antagonists promote apoptosis in cancer cells, which typically evade cell death mechanisms to proliferate uncontrollably. Examples of IAP antagonists include birinapant and LCL161, which have been studied in various cancers to enhance the effectiveness of chemotherapy and radiotherapy by sensitizing cancer cells to apoptosis.
