RAAS antagonist
RAAS antagonists are pharmaceutical agents that target the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), a key regulator of blood pressure and fluid balance in the body. These antagonists interfere with different components of the RAAS pathway to reduce its activity and counteract its effects. The RAAS pathway begins with the release of renin from the kidneys in response to low blood pressure or reduced sodium levels. Renin converts angiotensinogen, produced by the liver, into angiotensin I. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) then converts angiotensin I into angiotensin II, a potent vasoconstrictor that also stimulates the release of aldosterone from the adrenal glands. Aldosterone promotes sodium and water retention, leading to increased blood volume and higher blood pressure. RAAS antagonists include ACE inhibitors, which block the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, and angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), which prevent angiotensin II from binding to its receptors.
