P-gp inhibitors
P-glycoprotein (P-gp) inhibitors are compounds that interfere with the function of P-gp, a membrane protein involved in drug efflux and transport across cell membranes. P-gp is a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter family and is expressed in various tissues, including the intestines, liver, kidney, and blood-brain barrier. Its role is to actively pump out a wide range of substances, including drugs, toxins, and metabolites, from inside the cell to the extracellular space or vice versa. P-gp inhibitors work by binding to P-gp and blocking its transport activity, thereby increasing the intracellular concentration and bioavailability of co-administered drugs that are substrates of P-gp.
