CFTR activator

CFTR (Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator) activators are compounds that stimulate the function of the CFTR protein, which is crucial for chloride ion transport across cell membranes. CFTR is primarily found in epithelial cells lining the airways, digestive tract, and sweat glands. Mutations in the CFTR gene can lead to cystic fibrosis (CF), a genetic disorder characterized by thick, sticky mucus that clogs the airways and other ducts in the body.CFTR activators work by binding to the defective CFTR protein and enhancing its opening (gating) or conductance, thereby restoring chloride ion transport across cell membranes. This helps to thin mucus secretions and improve the hydration of epithelial surfaces affected by CF. By increasing CFTR activity, these activators aim to alleviate symptoms and potentially slow disease progression in CF patients.
