Synthetic food colors

Synthetic food colors are artificial additives used to impart or enhance the color of food and beverages. These colors are chemically synthesized compounds that replicate or create hues not naturally found in foods. Common synthetic food colors include FD&C Blue No. 1 (Brilliant Blue FCF), FD&C Red No. 40 (Allura Red AC), and FD&C Yellow No. 5 (Tartrazine), among others. They are added to food products to make them more visually appealing, provide consistency in appearance, and compensate for natural color variations. Synthetic food colors are extensively regulated and approved for use by food safety authorities like the FDA in the United States and the EFSA in the European Union, which assess their safety through rigorous testing for potential health risks, including allergic reactions and toxicity.
