Column
In chromatography, a column is a fundamental component of the chromatographic system used to separate components of a sample based on their physical or chemical properties. Columns are typically packed with a stationary phase material that interacts with the sample molecules as they pass through the column. The stationary phase can be composed of solid particles (in solid-phase chromatography) or a liquid coating (in liquid-phase chromatography) immobilized on a support material. The sample mixture, called the mobile phase, flows through the column, and different components interact differently with the stationary phase, resulting in varying retention times and elution patterns. Columns vary in dimensions, packing material, and selectivity to suit different analytical and preparative chromatographic applications.
