    (1884–1949). A German chemist who won a Nobel Prize in 1931 with Bosch for chemical high-pressure methods. He invented a method of converting coal dust into oil via pressurized hydrogen. He also invented a method for production of cattle feed and sugar from wood by hydrolysis. He was educated in Poland and Germany.
