Noncorroding metal. Does not react with moist air to form hydroxide. Mp 1407C, bp 2330C, d 8.54. Reacts slowly with water and halogen gases; soluble in dilute acids. High cross section for thermal neutrons.
Derivation:
Reduction of the fluoride with calcium.
Available forms:
High-purity lumps, ingots, sponge, powder.
Use:
Measurement of neutron flux, reactor fuels, fluorescence activator in phosphors.
