    (1918– ). An American physical chemist who won the Nobel Prize for chemistry along with Hauptman in 1985. He developed a series of mathematical equations that allow determination of phase information from X-ray crystallography intensity patterns. The advent of computers allowed the use of the equations to determine the conformation of thousands of chemicals. The work was done at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. where Karle headed the Laboratory for the Structure of Matter.
