(novolac). A thermoplastic phenol-formaldehyde−type resin obtained primarily by the use of acid catalysts and excess phenol. Generally alcohol soluble and requires reaction with hexamethylenetetramine, p-formaldehyde, etc. for conversion to cured, cross-linked structures by heating at 200–400F.

Molding materials, bonding materials, bonding agent in brake linings, abrasive grinding wheels, electrical insulation, clutch facings, air-drying varnishes, reinforcing agent and modifier for nitrile rubber.
