Silvery-white metal. Mp 1,160C, density 7.2.
Derivation:
The 147 isotope is recovered from spent uranium fission products, also by reduction of the chloride or fluoride with an alkali metal.
Hazard:
Strong radioactive poison, use requires shielding and glove boxes.
Use:
(147 isotope) Nuclear auxiliary power generators, special semiconductor battery, luminescent paint for watch dials, X-ray source, source of β-rays for thickness gauges, used with tungsten cermet for space power systems (withstands 2000C for 1000 hours). Note: Some 30 compounds are known, but may not be commercially available.
