Fonofos (CAS NO.944-22-9) is a light-yellow liquid with a pungent mercaptan-like odor.It is very slightly soluble in water.Organothiophosphates, such as Fonofos, are susceptible to formation of highly toxic and flammable phosphine gas in the presence of strong reducing agents such as hydrides. Partial oxidation by oxidizing agents may result in the release of toxic phosphorus oxides. Fonofos is a cholinesterase inhibitor. It can cause severe symptoms and death from respiratory arrest. When Fonofos is heated to decomposition, it can emit highly toxic fumes of phosphorus oxides.
