Optically active trans-2-(arylthio or alkylthio)-cyclohexanols are prepared by the asymmetric ring-opening of cyclohexene oxide with various arylthiols or alkylthiols in 52-85 percent ee by the use of zinc Lg-tartrate as a heterogeneous chiral Lewis acid catalyst.
