dimers in Table 2. Their Mn–O–Mn angle is the largest one among
similar structure with the same outer axial ligand.
Miyasaka et al. reported a systematic investigation on the corre-
lation between the dimeric core structure and the exchange cou-
pling within a family of MnIII saltmen and naphtmen complexes
[10]. They found a linear correlation between the bond distance

of Mn–O

and the exchange coupling constant in this family
is the phenolate oxygen of the neighboring molecule in-
Ph
(O

volved in the same out-of-plane dimer). However, not all dimers
obey this correlation. We summarized and compared all the simi-
lar complexes with the same axial ligand (Table 2). Unfortunately,
we have not find a obvious correlation between the structure and
the exchange coupling. It is still a difficult challenge to find a clear
correlation between the Mn–Mn magnetic interaction and the
structural features of these MnIII dimeric complexes.

4. Conclusions
We have reported synthesis, structure and magnetic properties
of four new out-of-plane MnIII dimers with salpn (salpn = N,N0-
(1,2-propane)-bis-(salicylideneiminate)) quadridentate Schiff-
base, which exhibit intra-dimer ferromagnetic coupling. With
different tetradentate Schiff-base and apical ligands, the
MnIII–MnIII magnetic interaction can be modulated. Assembled
these ST = 4 dimeric units with proper bridging ligand and other
paramagnetic building block, may afford interesting architectures
with fascinating magnetic properties.
