Reaction of mesomorphic alkynes with led to the Rh(III) complexes mer,trans- which are liquid crystalline; they are rare examples of rod-like liquid crystals based on an octahedral metal centre and represent a unique homologous series of mesomorphic metal complexes containing a hydrido function.
