The reaction between gaseous AlCl3 and steam, and the products formed were examined by X-ray analysis, TG, DTA, and electron microscopy.The thermal transitions of the Al2O3 formed under various conditions were also examined.The reaction between gaseous AlCl3 and steam occurs even at 150 deg C and proceeds rapidly above about 400 deg C.The product is amorphous Al2O3 below 600 deg C, amorphous Al2O3 containing poorly crystallized γ-Al2O3 at 800 deg C, γ-Al2O3 containing amorphous Al2O3 at 900 deg C, and γ-Al2O3 at 1000 deg C.Also, it was observed that the Al2O3 formed below 900 deg C included a chloride oxide of alluminium, which decomposed in the vicinity of 830 deg C to form γ-Al2O3 with the evolution of gaseous AlCl3.On heating the amorphous Al2O3 formed by the reaction between gaseous AlCl3 and steam, the transition: amorphous <*>χ <*> κ <*> α occurs; and on heating the γ-Al2O3 formed by the same reaction, the transition: γ<*> δ<*> θ<*> α occurs.
