First asymmetric synthesis of (-)-(2S,3R)-methanoproline

The title amino acid was synthesized in enantiomerically pure form, starting from (S)-(-)-butanetriol 1, by condensation of cyclic sulfate 3 with methyl benzylideneglycinate.
