4. Conclusion
In summary, we have successfully designed and synthesized
two novel turn-on uorescent probes, PCS and NCS, by
combining either 7-hydroxyl-3-(pyridin-2-yl) coumarin or 7-
hydroxyl-3-cyanocoumarin as the uorophore and 2,4-dini-
trobenzene-1-sulfonyl chloride as the recognition unit. Both
probes displayed low background signal, rapid detection, and
good sensitivity for biothiols in aqueous solution. Further-
more, they exhibited excellent selectivity for biothiols over
other common amino acids, metal ions and BSA. The distin-
guished cell permeability and low toxicity demonstrated that
NCS and PCS have great potential for efficient quantication
of thiols in biological systems. In addition, PCS is also suit-
able to quantify the biothiols in serum and may have the
potential for clinical use.
