ordering to 1b in DMF. After thermal annealing, a dynamic
network formed to give a free-standing supramolecular LC
material (Figure 5b). The LC assembly is maintained after
gelation of the mixture, which was confirmed by SAXD.
Interestingly, the resultant polymer gel shows self-healing
properties, as shown in Figure 5c, owing to the dynamic
properties of the acylhydrazone linkage.

In view of LC materials, we have successfully incorporated
several nanometer-sized spherical complexes. The size of the

been used as cores to form LC phases (Figure 3b). Formation of
giant spherical complexes and their functionalization for LC
materials were achieved by self-assembly of 24 forklike
mesogenic ligands and 12 Pd(II) ions.
In conclusion, we have successfully constructed well-defined

the surface of the spheres, which leads to layered organization
of the spheres by LC self-assembly. We also produced spherical
complexes/polymer hybrid LC nanostructured gels exhibiting
self-healing properties through formation of dynamic covalent
bonds. Use of hierarchical self-assembly allows formation of
discrete giant LC molecular materials. Furthermore,
functionalization of the LC spherical complexes and gels is
possible by modification of the inner cavity of the spheres.[7,8]
Combining liquid crystals, dynamic covalent structures, and
host–guest chemistry of spherical complexes will open new
avenues in supramolecular and material sciences.
