Potassium hydrogen fluoride Specification

Potassium hydrogen fluoride with CAS registry number of 10387-40-3 is the inorganic compound with the formula KHF2. This colourless salt consists of the potassium cation and the bifluoride (HF2−) anion. The salt is used in etchant for glass. Potassium hydrogen fluoride is related and is also of commercial use as an etchant as well as in cleaning products.

Physical properties about Potassium hydrogen fluoride are: (1)Formula mass: 78.10; (2)Melting point, °C: 239; (3)Boiling point, °C: 195 (transforms); (4)Vapor density (air=1): UNKNOWN; (5)Density: 2.375 - 2.385 g/cm3; (6)Solubility in water: 39 g/100ml; (7)Heat of fusion: 24.40 kJ/mol;

Preparation of Potassium hydrogen fluoride: The salt was prepared by Edmond Frémy who decomposed it to generate, for the first time, hydrogen fluoride. Potassium hydrogen fluoride is prepared by treating potassium carbonate or potassium hydroxide with hydrofluoric acid:

Preparation of Potassium hydrogen fluoride 2

The electrolysis of Potassium hydrogen fluoride was used by Henri Moissan to isolate the element fluorine in 1886.
A related material containing two equivalents of HF is also known, KH2F3. The industrial production of fluorine entails the electrolysis of molten KH2F3.

Uses of Potassium hydrogen fluoride: Potassium hydrogen fluoride is mainly used for the manufacture of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, pure potassium fluoride, optical glass, elemental fluorine,and so on.

When you are using Potassium hydrogen fluoride, please be cautious about it as the following:
In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice;
Wear suitable protective clothing;
Wear suitable gloves and eye/face protection.
