Synthesis of hexa- peri -hexobenzocoronenes carrying linear or branched perfluoroalkylated side chains

10.1055/s-0029-1218667

The study investigates the synthesis and characterization of substituted hexa-peri-hexobenzocoronenes (HBC) with linear or branched perfluoroalkylated side chains. These molecules are known for their ability to self-assemble into conducting ordered architectures, making them promising candidates for advanced functional materials. The researchers systematically varied the perfluoroalkylated side chains to study their influence on one-dimensional self-aggregation. The synthesis involved cyclodehydrogenation of hexaphenylbenzene (HPB) under Kovacic conditions, with modifications to accommodate the electron-withdrawing effect of the perfluorinated lateral chains. Key steps included the preparation of correctly substituted tolane derivatives through tandem Sonogashira cross-coupling and subsequent cyclotrimerization using cobalt-mediated catalysts. The study also explored the synthesis of HBC derivatives with branched perfluoroalkylated side chains to further investigate the impact of steric hindrance on self-assembly. The synthesized HBC derivatives were characterized using various techniques, including NMR, mass spectrometry, and UV/VIS spectroscopy, to confirm their structures and properties.
