General Description
(2,2'-Bipyridine)bis(2-phenylpyridinato)iridium(III) hexafluorophosphate, also known as [Ir(ppy)2(bpy)]PF6, is a cationic cyclometalated Ir(III) complex that exhibits dual emission from metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) states associated with its ortho-metalating (ppy) and chelating (bpy) ligands. It serves as an efficient photosensitizer due to its strong visible-light absorption and photoluminescence near 550 nm, attributed to triplet ligand charge-transfer (3LC) and 3MLCT transitions. The complex is widely used in photocatalytic applications, such as hydrogen evolution, where it facilitates electron transfer processes when paired with proton reduction catalysts like Rh(III) complexes. Its electrochemical properties include reversible ligand-centered reductions, and it demonstrates stability in heterogeneous systems, making it suitable for recyclable photocatalysis without significant structural degradation or leaching.
