Sodium perchlorate History

Reactivity Profile: Sodium perchlorate is a strong oxidizing agent. Explosively decomposed at over 130°C [Merck 11th ed. 1989]. A mixture with powdered magnesium is a friction-sensitive mixture [Safety Eng. Reports 1947]. A mixture with ammonium nitrate is used as an explosive [Mellor 2 Supp. 1:608 1956]. A 1:1 mixture of the perchlorate and hydrazine exploded upon grinding, [Chem. Abs., 1969, 70, 53524].

Preparation: Sodium perchlorate is produced by anodic oxidation of sodium chlorate, not sodium chloride, at a platinum electrode.

NaClO3 + H2O → NaClO4 + H2

Uses of Sodium perchlorate: (1)Perchloric acid is made by treating NaClO4 with HCl; (2)NaClO4 finds only minimal use in pyrotechnics because it is hygroscopic; ammonium and potassium perchlorates are preferred. (3)NaClO4 has a variety of uses in the laboratory, often as a nonreactive electrolyte. For example, it is used in standard DNA extraction and hybridization reactions in molecular biology.

When you are using this chemical, please be cautious about it as the following:
