Ion Formation

When the strong base abstracts the acidic hydrogen atom, it forms an ion pair. For example, if a sodium atom abstracts a proton, it becomes a positively charged sodium cation (Na+) and the deprotonated organic compound becomes a negatively charged organic anion.
