Oxidation to Convert Aldose to Ketose

In order to convert the aldose sugar into a ketose, you will need to oxidize the aldehyde group at C-1. This can be achieved using mild oxidizing agents like sodium periodate (NaIO4). The oxidation of the aldehyde to a ketone will result in the formation of a ketohexonic acid derivative.
