Photochromic Properties

Naphthopyran derivatives are known for their photochromic behavior. Photochromism refers to the reversible transformation of a compound between two forms with distinct absorption spectra, induced by exposure to light, especially ultraviolet (UV) light. Naphthopyran derivatives can switch between a colored, open-ring isomer and a colorless, closed-ring isomer upon UV light exposure. This property has applications in photochromic materials for eyeglasses, optical filters, and data storage devices.
