Transition state stabilization

The chiral catalyst used in the CBS reduction interacts with the reacting molecules (the ketone and the reducing agent) through nonbonding interactions. These interactions help stabilize the transition state of the reaction, which is the high-energy state that occurs as the hydride is transferred from the reducing agent to the ketone. The chiral catalyst's nonbonding interactions guide the transition state to favor the formation of one enantiomer over the other.
