Uranium carbide (CAS NO.12070-09-6) was used in late designs of nuclear thermal rockets, and like uranium dioxide and some other uranium compounds, uranium carbide can be used as a nuclear fuel for nuclear reactors. As nuclear fuel, uranium carbide can be used either on its own, or mixed with plutonium carbide . Its pellets are used as fuel kernels for the US version of pebble bed reactors.
A radioactive material. The powdered carbide ignites spontaneously in air. See also URANIUM.

ACGIH TLV: TWA 0.2 mg(U)/m3; STEL 0.6 mg(U)/m3
Uranium carbide ,its cas register number is 12070-09-6. It is a hard refractive ceramic material and comes in several stoichiometries (UCx) .Ammonia synthesis from nitrogen and hydrogen is sometimes accomplished in the presence of Uranium carbide (CAS NO.12070-09-6) acting as a catalyst.
